Seventh High-Level Cross-Regional Roundtable on the Prevention and Elimination of Violence against Children - Manila, Philippines 6-8 June 2017

The Seventh Cross-Regional Round Table organized by the office of SRSG in Manila, Philippines from 6-8 June, will place special emphasis on the links between eliminating violence against children and the eradication of child poverty and the promotion of children's social inclusion, including in light of the development of child-friendly health, education and social services, and the fostering of cross-sectoral cooperation to prevent and address violence against children.

The 2017 Round Table will include a public session with the participation of a broad range of stakeholders during which two main themes will be addressed: the protection of children from bullying and online abuse and the empowerment and participation of children to prevent and address incidents of violence.

The present annual report provides, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 69/157, an overview of major developments promoted by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children to sustain and scale up efforts to safeguard children’s freedom from violence.

Office of SRSG on Violence against Children organizes global expert meeting on bullying and cyber-bullying - 9-10 May Innocenti Research Center, Florence - Italy

The Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, with the support of UNICEF Innocenti, have convened a global expert’s consultation to discuss the growing impact of bullying and cyber-bullying on children.

The consultation aims to identify specific gaps and weaknesses of existing data and agree on recommendations on what type of data should be collected to support policy making and effective interventions. It will also identify essential elements of an effective policy, both at national and local level as well as areas in which specific legislation should be enacted to support a comprehensive policy to address bullying.

General Assembly Resolution 69/158 requested the Secretary-General to submit a report to its seventy-first session on protecting children from bullying which is addressed by the Third Committee of the General Assembly (A/71/213).

In support of this process, the Office of the Special Representative in collaboration with a group of leading experts on this topic, is launching a book on the protection of children from bullying and cyberbullying: Ending the Torment: tackling bullying from the schoolyard to cyberspace.

The Office of the SRSG on Violence against Children is organizing a panel discussion on "Protecting children from bullying" on Tuesday 13 October 2015, on the occasion of the General Assembly Third Commitee debate on the rights of the child.

This event is organized in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Mexico and the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations. 

The event will be held from 13:15 to 14:30 in Conference Room 6, UN Headquarters, New York.
