The General Assembly,

Reaffirming all of its previous resolutions on the rights of the child, the most recent of which was resolution 69/157 of 18 December 2014, and in particular recognizing the importance of resolution 44/25 of 20 November 1989, in which it adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, (...)

Expresses support for the work of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, and recognizes the progress achieved since the establishment of her mandate in promoting the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children in all regions and in advancing the implementation of the recommendations of the United Nations study on violence against children, including through her regional and thematic consultations and field missions, and thematic reports addressing emerging concerns;

SRSG Santos Pais organizes International Seminar in Argentina on children deprived of liberty

On 19 and 20 May the International Seminar "Monitoring and supervision of centres of deprivation of liberty for children" was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This activity was co-organized by UNICEF Argentina and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence against Children (SRSG VAC) as a contribution to the preparation of the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty requested by the UN Secretary General.

Stockholm, 10 June 2016 - On the year of the tenth anniversary of the UN Study on Violence against Children and as the implementation, follow-up and review process of the 2030 Agenda takes shape, SRSG on Violence against Children Marta Santos Pais convened the 6th Cross-Regional Round Table on the prevention and elimination of violence against children of regional organizations and institutions in Stockholm on 30-31 May to discuss the regions’ role in supporting efforts to reach the violence-related goals and targets agreed upon in Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development.

SRSG Santos Pais gathers experts from around the world on children’s protection from bullying and cyberbullying

SRSG Santos Pais convened a consultation with experts from around the world on the prevention and elimination of bullying and cyberbullying in preparation of the Report of the Secretary-General on Protecting Children from Bullying, called for by General Assembly resolution 69/158. Hosted with UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti, the consultation took place in Florence on 9-10 May.

Guided by the SRSG priorities to consolidate knowledge and accelerate progress in children’s freedom from violence, the meeting provided a strategic opportunity to review laws, policies and initiatives on children’s protection from bullying and cyberbullying, as well as available data and evidence on this important phenomenon.

Marta Santos Pais welcomes the launch of a landmark Global Study on the protection of children from sexual exploitation in travel and tourism

Washington D.C. (12 May 2016)– The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, Ms Marta Santos Pais, welcomes the launch of a landmark Global Study on the protection of children from sexual exploitation in travel and tourism.

 

The Global Study is the culmination of two years of research led by ECPAT International in collaboration with leading child rights experts, law enforcement agencies, civil society organizations and private sector partners. Itreveals that both the scale and the nature of the sexual exploitation of children in the context of travel and tourism have worsened dramatically, with greater risks than ever before for children to become victims of this serious child rights violation.

 

SRSG Santos Pais welcomes the creation of a high level position in Sweden to protect children from trafficking

SRSG Santos Pais today commended the Government of Sweden for the appointment for the first time of an ambassador to combat trafficking in human beings.
 
“Child trafficking is a serious form of violence that compromises children's rights and needs to be vigorously addressed at national and international levels. I congratulate the Government of Sweden for the creation of this new position designed to prevent, early detect and respond to situations of trafficking, protect the rights of victims and fight impunity.
 

SRSG calls for creation of European-wide circle of non-violence to secure children's protection, leaving no one behind

Participating in the launch of the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child (2016-2021), SRSG Santos Pais recalled the significance of the Strategy to accelerate progress in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and in creating a European wide circle of non-violence to secure children’s protection from neglect, abuse and exploitation.

Special Representative Santos Pais welcomes ratification of United Arab Emirates of Optional Protocol on sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography

Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence against Children, Marta Santos Pais, welcomes the recent accession by the United Arab Emirates to the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography.
 
 “By becoming a State Party to this Protocol, the United Arab Emirates make a crucial step to strengthen children’s protection from sexual exploitation. It also supports international cooperation efforts to prevent very serious crimes and to fight the impunity that surrounds them. As we start the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, I trust this excellent news will mobilize further and determined action in the region in support of the targets aiming at ending violence against children.” said SRSG Santos Pais.
