The Human Rights Council,

Emphasizing that the Convention on the Rights of the Child constitutes the standard in the promotion and protection of the rights of the child, bearing in mind the importance of the Optional Protocols to the Convention, and calling for their universal ratification and effective implementation, as well as that of other relevant human rights instruments, Recalling all previous resolutions on the rights of the child of the Commission on Human Rights, the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly, the most recent being Council resolution 28/19 of 27 March 2015 and Assembly resolution 70/137 of 17 December 2015, (...)

Summary
 
The present report is submitted pursuant to General Assembly resolution 69/157. The Special Rapporteur, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, describes the activities undertaken in relation to the discharge of her mandate since her previous report to the Assembly (A/69/262).
 
She also provides a study containing an analysis of the effects of the sale and sexual exploitation of children on child victims and advocates for the establishment of comprehensive, rights-based and child-centred care, recovery and reintegration programmes as part of effective national child protection systems.

Summary
 
The present report assesses the steps taken in 2014 to achieve a world fit for children, highlighting the gaps in achievement as well as the strategic shifts necessary to achieve the unmet goals.
The report has been prepared in response to General Assembly resolution S-27/2, adopted at the twenty-seventh special session in 2002, and resolutions 58/282 and 61/272, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to report regularly on progress made in implementing the Plan of Action included in the annex to the resolution entitled “A world fit for children”.

It contains a brief overview of international obligations and global commitments with respect to the girl child. It addresses progress and challenges in areas such as poverty, equity, education, health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, HIV and AIDS, protection from violence, abuse and exploitation, child participation and human rights education

SRSG Santos Pais participates as keynote speaker at the First Regional Summit on Digital Literacy and Citizenship "Technology for a Better World" which takes place on November 5th and 6th in Tecnopolis, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The promotion of a safe, inclusive and empowering digital agenda for children is a key priority for the mandate and indispensable strategy to protect children from violence.

With the challenge of ensuring that children and teenagers can interact with ICT (Information and Communications Technology) without violence, and to promote the exercise of their rights to a safe, responsible and meaningful use of them, we intend to organize this unique event for the call and the integration of different social actors.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children, in cooperation with UNICEF and the Government of Honduras, convened an International Expert Consultation on Children’s Right to Protection from Armed Violence in the Community. Held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the meeting gathered representatives from national governments, UN agencies, regional organizations, research institutions and civil society; as well as children and young people.

HONIARA, 21 May 2015 - Concluding a three day visit to the Solomon Islands, the SRSG commended the government for the expression of its strong commitment to the prevention and elimination of violence against children through the enactment of legislation, policy reform and increased budgetary allocations for children. During her visit, the SRSG met the Prime Minister H.E. Mannaseh Sogavare and other high level officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, the Minister of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, the Minister of Justice, and the Police Commissioner.

GENEVA (9 February 2015) –Top United Nations experts on children’s rights and on freedom of expression join the voices of children, parents, teachers, policymakers, law enforcement, industry and civil society in their call to create a better and safe Internet.  

Speaking ahead of the global Safer Internet Day, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children, Marta Santos Pais; the Special Rapporteur on sale and sexual exploitation of children, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio; and the Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, David Kaye, call on States and the IT industry to tackle head on online child sexual abuse and exploitation, while protecting the right to freedom of expression of both children and adults.

New York, 15 December 2014 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children participated in a high-level event “Children, Sport and Development – CRC@25: achievements and looking to post-2015”, at the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Co-organized in the framework of the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the Permanent Missions of Italy and Jamaica, the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, UNICEF and the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace, the event aimed to promote the right of the child to sports and its positive contribution to children’s health, education, development and well-being, while noting its associated risks.
