Violence against Children Still a Global Challenge

United Nations officials spoke in Germany about contemporary problems with violence against children in Germany and across the world.

The United Nations’ Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that violence against children may be underestimated. According to a new report, some 500 million to 1.5 billion children are victims of violence every year. This violence can take any number of different forms, including physical, emotional or psychological.

Violence can come from parents, caretakers, classmates, family, friends or strangers. Some of this abuse may result in death, but the majority doesn’t leave any lasting visible mark at all.[

 Not only can violence strip children of their self-confidence and leave lasting emotional or psychological scars, but it can also cause children to run away from home. Runaways face a whole new set of vulnerabilities, including homelessness, food insecurity and susceptibility to human trafficking.
